Seeking Land for Community Gardens / Allotments in Roscommon to support sustainability & biodiversity.
I tabled a motion at the recent meeting of Roscommon Municipal District: calling on Roscommon County Council to facilitate the development of allotments / community gardens in Roscommon through the provision of land to support sustainability and biodiversity – Cllr. Orla Leyden The motion was agreed at the meeting. I was happy with the positive response from Roscommon County Council Reply: Roscommon County Council is prepared to consider submissions from Community Groups in relation to proposals for Community Gardens in the context of availability of suitable lands and the proposed management of the garden. There are some excellent community garden projects already in the County like Cloontuskert Residents Association / Tidy Towns Polytunnel Garden, Ballaghaderreen Community Garden, Nualas Garden, Derrane, Ballyleague Ballyleague Mens Shed garden and others..it would be great to see Community gardens and allotments becoming the norm and a whole Grow Irish campaign started with community gardens, allotments, more farm vegetable gardens, kitchen gardens etc. Energy, Passion, Ideas, a community in motion...it was a pure joy to facilitate at the Roscommon Town Team “Friends of Edenville House” event this morning in Gleesons Restaurant & Rooms. Thanks to everyone that came and shared their ideas for the future of Edenville (Blacks) House which is an incredible cultural heritage resource for Roscommon Town and County. The potential is immense...appreciating the past and looking to the future. I will compile the ideas presented at the group work session earlier and organise a follow up meeting for all those interested through Roscommon Town Team. I will also organise a visit to Edenville House through Roscommon County Council as the next step in the revitalisation of Edenville House and continue to work with Roscommon Town Team and Roscommon County Council to realise our vision. Round town bus service for Roscommon Town? Is it needed? I think so, what about you? how would you use it?
At Roscommon County Council meeting on Monday 28th January, I hightlighted the need for a Round Town Local Link Transport Service for Roscommon Town. I would love to hear your views. This service could provide daily connectivity from the various Housing Estates and houses in Roscommon Town environs to the Train Station, Shopping, Work, Primary Care Centre, Roscommon University Hospital, Schools, Pre-schools, Quad Youth Centre, Library, Leisure Centre, sports clubs etc. Are you interested in seeing this service developed? Camilla Kelly, Manager Local Link service was present at the Council meeting. Local link provides door to door and scheduled bus services in rural villages in town. To date I initiated the rural tranpsort service in Oran area servicing Ballinheglish, Cloverhill area (and now includes Four mile House, Tonlegee and Mullymucks) into Roscommon Town and the Donamon, Fuerty, Castlecoote rural transport service via Mountprospect, Ballybride into town. I would love to hear where in the Roscommon Electoral area you think a local link service is needed, what about Kilteevan, Ballymurray, Knockcroghery, Four mile House (currently some service), Derrane, Ballagh, Ballyleague, Cloontuskert, Ballintubber. ROSCOMMON TRAIN STATION 160 years open next year...Great initiative by Roscommon Heritage Group working with Basil and Cathal, Iarnrod Eireann to enhance Roscommon Train Station.
Dave Dibble has taken huge pride in his voluntary work tidying and planting at the station. Out again today despite the bitter cold day. Well done to Dave and to all Roscommon Heritage Group chaired by David Molloy. I would like to see Roscommon Train Station further enhanced with artworking depicting Heritage attractions including Roscommon Castle and Domenican Abbey and our beautiful market town. I would also like to see Roscommon Tourism promoted inside the station like it has been at Ireland West Airport linking with Roscommon Tourist Office I am going Poster Free for the Local Election Campaign 2019 ...while the motion I tabled at Roscommon Municipal District meeting this morning was not supported by all members my resolve remains I will not use Posters regardless of what other candidates decide to do.
This is the motion: "That Roscommon Municipal District supports a Poster Free Local Election 2019 Campaign in the Roscommon Local Electoral Area in the interest of the environment, local amenity and in the interest of promoting a plastic free Roscommon" Reply from Executive: The members of the Roscommon Municipal Distrct can agree by resolution to support a Poster Free Local Election Campaign in 2019, however there is no legal foundation for the proposal and therefore it cannot be enforced if other candidates choose to erect posters. I proposed the motion. It was seconded by Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher (who ran a poster free campaign in 2014). Unfortunately the motion was not passed. Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice (who was supportive) and Cllr. Michael Creaton both said that they supported the sentiment of the motion but that if other candidates had posters then they would have to consider that. Cllr Nigel Dineen was vehemently opposed to the motion and made it clear that he would be using Posters in Campaign but would respect Tidy Towns committees where requests were made for no Posters I will be running a No Poster Local Election Campaign 2019. If we could all take action in our lives to Rethink our use of plastic then collectively we can make a difference! Posters are made of a single use plastic and the cable ties are plastic. By saying no to posters hopefully I will be one less cause of unsightly unnecessary plastic waste. I can't change others but I can change myself. In 2014 I used very few posters - no posters in villages and towns...this time I take the final step and will eliminate posters from my campaign entirely. The focus on plastic reduction since programmes such as the BBC Blue Planet 2 is making an impact. I have taken up the challenge not just in my personal life ...in my political life too
