Roscommon Hospice to be completed early 2021

1/12/2020

Roscommon Hospice to be completed in early 2021. It was a monumental day on Friday for all the volunteers that have worked for so long when the sod was turned by Sean Mulryan on Roscommon Hospice. Well done to CEO of Mayo Roscommon Hospice, Martina Jennings and all the staff and the incredible voluntary Board lead by Joanne Hynes. It was great to see Cynthia Clampett, former CEO at the sod turning event and all the people that have held fundraising events over the years and helped to run Hospice shops.
It is going to be a fantastic facility on a beautifully holistic space. It will be a tranquil, consoling yet life affirming facility giving full respect and dignity to everyone that uses it. Hospice is relevant to all our lives. The current buy a brick Roscommon Hospice fundraiser is hugely worthy of our support.

Re-vitalization of Roscommon Town Centre

Roscommon Town Centre Public Realm Enhancement Project Part 8 now on public display in Aras an Chontae, Roscommon. And the public are invited to make submissions.

This is an exciting plan for Roscommon Town with initial funding of €750,000 awarded to the project. It will see the development of a pedestrianized area to the east of the Town Centre (to the left of Market square as you look up Main Street) and an increase in the number of one hour parking spaces to free up the Free parking. The idea is to rejuvenate the County town, enhance the streetscape and to improve the experience for locals and visitors alike. This is an ambitious project that will increase footfall and economic turnover in the town, making Roscommon a destination town in Ireland's Hidden Heartlands

Cllr. Leyden welcomes Ireland’s Largest Fast Charger for EVs to be installed at Casey’s Circle K, Roscommon

I am delighted that Roscommon, the County Town will have the largest fast Charger for Electric Vehicles in the Country (80 kw) installed at Casey’s Circle K Roscommon in May 2019.

Well done to Jim McCausland, Manager Casey’s Circle K and Peter, Jim and the Casey Family for their foresight in bringing this EV Fast Charger to Town.

This is great for people with EV cars in the area and it is fantastic for promoting more visits to Roscommon by addressing the EV fast charging black spot. The fast charging point will put Roscommon Town back on the map for people with EV cars planning weekends away in Ireland etc. Jim’s determination in getting the EV Fast Charger unit installed before the Summer 2019 Tourism season is truly commendable. Jim, who is Chairperson of the County Roscommon Tourism forum is acutely aware of how this practical measure will improve visitor numbers to the County.
Casey’s Circle K is being proactive and putting the necessary infrastructure in place that will see Electric vehicles fully charged in half an hour. They are also playing an important role in encouraging more people to opt for Electric Vehicles by improving the supporting infrastructure, thus helping the environment.

I am disappointed that we are still waiting on Government to invest in the network of fast charging points in the Country and heartened that a local business is taking the initiative and showing their commitment to the area.

I would also like to thank John Mockler, Roscommon Municipal District Coordinator again for his assistance in improving the visibility of the standard (slow charging) EV charging areas in Roscommon Town with green marking thus making it easier for people with electric cars to charge their vehicles without obstruction.

Cllr. Orla Leyden highlighted the need for a ‘Round Town Local Link Bus Service’ for Roscommon Town at the recent plenary meeting of Roscommon County Council which was addressed by Camilla Kelly, Manager of Local Link in Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim.
Cllr. Leyden said that a scheduled bus service is very much needed in Roscommon, a county town which she described as a growing urban centre. She said that a local link bus service would make it easier to get from the various housing estates and houses in Roscommon Town environs to essential services and amenities; to get, for example, to work, the doctor, primary care centre, hospital, schools, pre-school, Quad Youth Centre, Library, Cinema, Leisure centre, sports clubs, the train station, etc.
Cllr. Orla Leyden said that she had initiated a rural transport service in the Oran area, servicing the Ballinheglish and Cloverhill area (including Fourmilehouse, Tonlegee and Mullymucks) into Roscommon Town and another (DRT) demand responsive transport service in the Donamon, Fuerty, Castlecoote rural area (via Mount Prospect and Ballybride). She said that she would like to see additional rural local link services now being developed.
Cllr. Leyden said she believes there is a need for a local link service in Kilteevan, Portrun, Ballymurray, Knockcroghery, Fourmilehouse (parts not presently served), Derrane, Ballagh, Ballyleague, Cloontuskert and Ballintubber into Roscommon Town, as well as a round town bus service in Roscommon town.
She stressed that people living in rural areas would be able to access services and facilities in Roscommon Town independently and at an affordable price if a local link service was in place. The Free Travel Pass is valid on all local link services and U-5s can travel for free. There are affordable fares on all routes with adult, child and student rates.
Cllr. Leyden said that she will work with the community to develop these vital rural transport services via Local Link in Roscommon.
