![]() I am delighted that Roscommon, the County Town will have the largest fast Charger for Electric Vehicles in the Country (80 kw) installed at Casey’s Circle K Roscommon in May 2019. Well done to Jim McCausland, Manager Casey’s Circle K and Peter, Jim and the Casey Family for their foresight in bringing this EV Fast Charger to Town. This is great for people with EV cars in the area and it is fantastic for promoting more visits to Roscommon by addressing the EV fast charging black spot. The fast charging point will put Roscommon Town back on the map for people with EV cars planning weekends away in Ireland etc. Jim’s determination in getting the EV Fast Charger unit installed before the Summer 2019 Tourism season is truly commendable. Jim, who is Chairperson of the County Roscommon Tourism forum is acutely aware of how this practical measure will improve visitor numbers to the County. Casey’s Circle K is being proactive and putting the necessary infrastructure in place that will see Electric vehicles fully charged in half an hour. They are also playing an important role in encouraging more people to opt for Electric Vehicles by improving the supporting infrastructure, thus helping the environment. I am disappointed that we are still waiting on Government to invest in the network of fast charging points in the Country and heartened that a local business is taking the initiative and showing their commitment to the area. I would also like to thank John Mockler, Roscommon Municipal District Coordinator again for his assistance in improving the visibility of the standard (slow charging) EV charging areas in Roscommon Town with green marking thus making it easier for people with electric cars to charge their vehicles without obstruction. Roscommon County Council is offering Free Food Waste Audits to Hotels, Restaurants and Cafes.
The Food Waste Audits will be conducted by Profitwatch who are industry experts. It is a simple and effective process that puts net cash back into your business. This service would normally cost over €1000!!! Please contact Suzanne at 0906637268 or sdempsey@roscommoncoco.ie for further details". I am going Poster Free for the Local Election Campaign 2019 ...while the motion I tabled at Roscommon Municipal District meeting this morning was not supported by all members my resolve remains I will not use Posters regardless of what other candidates decide to do.
This is the motion: "That Roscommon Municipal District supports a Poster Free Local Election 2019 Campaign in the Roscommon Local Electoral Area in the interest of the environment, local amenity and in the interest of promoting a plastic free Roscommon" Reply from Executive: The members of the Roscommon Municipal Distrct can agree by resolution to support a Poster Free Local Election Campaign in 2019, however there is no legal foundation for the proposal and therefore it cannot be enforced if other candidates choose to erect posters. I proposed the motion. It was seconded by Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher (who ran a poster free campaign in 2014). Unfortunately the motion was not passed. Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice (who was supportive) and Cllr. Michael Creaton both said that they supported the sentiment of the motion but that if other candidates had posters then they would have to consider that. Cllr Nigel Dineen was vehemently opposed to the motion and made it clear that he would be using Posters in Campaign but would respect Tidy Towns committees where requests were made for no Posters I will be running a No Poster Local Election Campaign 2019. If we could all take action in our lives to Rethink our use of plastic then collectively we can make a difference! Posters are made of a single use plastic and the cable ties are plastic. By saying no to posters hopefully I will be one less cause of unsightly unnecessary plastic waste. I can't change others but I can change myself. In 2014 I used very few posters - no posters in villages and towns...this time I take the final step and will eliminate posters from my campaign entirely. The focus on plastic reduction since programmes such as the BBC Blue Planet 2 is making an impact. I have taken up the challenge not just in my personal life ...in my political life too |
